INWARD//OUTWARD by Jaina Cipriano

Recently I was asked to make 5 self portraits for Leica Gallery Boston - very quickly the narrative emerged. These works I created were about the female body in a world where religion and purity culture tell us how to feel. And how hard it can be to move past that. The show is up from March 8 - April 22.

Step into the private lives of three women celebrating and addressing their hometowns, families, and bodies. Looking inward to look outward - Inward/Outward takes a moment of pause to see how women see themselves. Eliminating the gaze of onlookers- there is no mistake in the message they are trying to convey to the world.

Using self-portraits and various mediums of photography creation - viewers are invited to experience the joy, turmoil, and comfort of being and seeing yourself.

Artists in Exhibition are Marika Belamarich, Jaina Cipriano, and Kris Nevaeh. Photo Credit: Karen Zusman.

Screening at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge by Jaina Cipriano

If you would’ve told me five years ago, when I was living down the street from The Brattle Theatre, feeling very lost and confused that one day I’d be sitting in the middle of a packed crowd watching a film I made in that theater I would not have believed you.

So grateful for these opportunities to share my work and connect with others.

AudioVisio Ep. 18 / Jaina Cipriano: Tracing The Map of Personal Darkness By Bringing Your Subjects To Light by Jaina Cipriano

“On this episode of the AudioVisio Podcast, Matt and I talk to Jaina Cipriano, a "visual art renaissance woman," and overall creative badass. Her process of creating scenic settings for her photoshoots, ultimately eliminate the need for editing in post, and evoke a visceral gut wrenching sensation of the loss of childhood dreams.”

Backlit: Equipment by Jaina Cipriano

During the summer I had the opportunity to sit down with High Output Academy and Women in Film Video New England for this new series titled Backlit.

The Infinite Mirage of Rapture by Jaina Cipriano

Opening next month in Winchester, MA!

These works communicate the complex grief of growing up as a woman in a culture dedicated to stifling authentic emotion and communication. This is especially precarious for those of us who fear abandonment, as it is easy, in our search for love and connection, to get caught in a web of codependency without any means of emotional salvation.

I am interested in creating a space where people with similar trauma can feel witnessed by others as the first step to liberation from this cycle of silence, the facade of isolation. My pieces depict cut-off subjects struggling to escape liminal spaces. When they realize no one is coming to save them, they seek the strength to save themselves.

Planned Parenthood Commission by Jaina Cipriano

During the spring I was chosen by Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts to be one of several artists to create a pro-abortion work of art for their new campaign.

The release has come at a dark time with the bounty Texas has put on women.

Growing up I never felt my body was mine - for lots of reasons. Mostly trauma, misogyny, sexism and christianity. It was not until I started really working in therapy that I began to claim it. And it was not easy.

I support a woman's right to choose. To own her own body. To decide her future. And creating this work was such an honor.

Thank you to Adrianne Moreno, Angela Cannatelli and Madeline Bugeau-Heartt for creating this piece with me.
